Cover of The Hunger Games prequel book ‘Sunrise On The Reaping’

Chapter 14 of Sunrise on the Reaping details Haymitch’s call with Lenore Dove and his conversation with Plutarch about the plot to drown the arena.

This review is part of a series where I review one chapter of Sunrise on the Reaping each day as I read along!

A Summary Of What Happens In Chapter 14 Of Sunrise On The Reaping

Chapter 14 picks up with Haymitch on a phone call with Lenore Dove. Lenore tells Haymitch of how she has been imprisoned for singing banned songs to crowds in District 12, however, she will be freed the next day. The couple then exchange goodbyes for what could be their last time.

Plutarch tells Haymitch that he arranged for the call in order to make him trust him. Plutarch then goes on to give Haymitch some useful information for the plot to drown the arena, including that the mutt portals may be concealed by berms of flowers. They are then interrupted by Effie who prompts them to return to the others.

The District 12 tributes strategically coin names for the Careers and plan to paint them out to be Capitol-wannabes under the advice of Plutarch. Plutarch then shoots some footage of the tributes for the games with each of them saying their own phrases against the careers.

The tributes return to their apartment where their mentors have prepared a large dinner for them. As they are going to sleep, Maysilee and Wyatt discuss with Haymitch his reasons for planning to go it alone during the games. They eventually agree that Haymitch’s low score makes him a liability to either all of them all or just him as the Game Makers will be after him during the games.

The chapter closes out with the District 12 tributes struggling to doze off due to anticipation of what’s to come in the games (with the exception of Lou Lou who falls asleep instantly). Haymitch contemplates if he will ever see Lenore Dove again as he tries to sleep.

Review – Is Chapter 14 of Sunrise on the Reaping Good?

This chapter acts as a great buffer between the previous chapter and what is to come in the games. It does a lot of ground work for the overall storyline which we can expect to see a payoff for – such as finding out about Lenore Dove’s imprisonment and more specifics about how Haymitch can enact the plot to drown the arena.

Notably, this is the only chapter which doesn’t have a major cliffhanger but I guess the pending morning of the games is as much of a cliffhanger as you really need. I really liked this and thought it was a smart touch as it almost makes it feel like the ‘quiet before the storm’.

Discussion – What Do We Think Will Happen To Lenore Dove?

We find out in this chapter that Lenore Dove is being held by Peace Keepers for singing banned songs as an act of rebellion following Haymitch’s low score from the Game Makers. She does say she will be getting released the next day which may be the case – but could also not be.

Given that we don’t see her in the original The Hunger Games trilogy, we can expect that she may soon be killed within Sunrise on the Reaping. If she is spared in Sunrise on the Reaping, it may be that she is instead killed in the next book which will likely take place sometime after Sunrise on the Reaping (FYI: Another prequel book is not confirmed yet but does seem likely).

I have a feeling that we may unfortunately see her go later on in Sunrise on the Reaping but in which way I have no idea. Hopefully she will somehow get to help or see Haymitch one more time before she goes and we will find out the secret Maysilee has yet to tell Haymitch about her.
